OUR STORY
AND MISSION

Road to Roots was born out of countless hours in the classroom with teens who posed challenging questions—questions that emerged from deep engagement with historical events. Over time, it became clear that traveling to spaces we would otherwise encounter only in textbooks was not merely beneficial, but essential. Why? Because travel opens both the intellect and the heart.

The Western Muslim diaspora is often cut off from its ancestral lands; reconnecting with these places cultivates a deeper sense of self, belonging, and historical continuity.

At Road to Roots, we believe in the meaningful integration of training within Western academic spaces and the rich legacy of the Muslim intellectual tradition. We hold that the knowledge rooted in our turath (heritage) carries the seeds to empower us—and future generations—with the tools to envision a bright, innovative, and creative future. It is this training and vision that we bring into our excursions, allowing young people to experience the stories of these lands through a renewed and expansive lens.

What Do We Do?

Muslims have a rich tradition of travel for trade, knowledge, and discovery seen in the journeys of Ibn Battuta, Ibn Fadlan, and Evliya Çelebi. We believe travel is more than movement; it’s a way to experience ideas, stories, and history in real life.

Our work supports young people in traveling independently. Through travel, they build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the world — all essential tools for adult life. The greatest souvenir? New ideas and new ways of seeing.
